Biographical Information

The first place to look for biographical information on an author (or just about anyone else for that matter) is the Biography Resource Center. The link to this full text database can be found on the Library home page under "Databases".

To search the BRC, simply type in the individual's name. All of the results will be available full text online. As an example, let's look for Lofton Hudson. The Hudson Collection on the Library's first floor is named after this pioneer in family therapy.

1. Type in as much of the person's name as you know, or, as an alternative, you can just type in their last name and select the "Start of last name" option.

2. There is one full-text "narrative" entry for him in the BRC. If there had been other types of entries available, the text on the navigation tabs would not have been greyed-out.

3. Remember, this database is full text, so you get the entire text of the entry. This particular entry gives you the biographee's awards, information on career, personal information, a list of their writings, and sources of further information (which can be particularly useful if you are having difficulty finding enough information on the person).

If the individual you are looking for is not in the Biography Resource Center, the next place to look is the Biography and Genealogy Master Index (also accessible from the Library home page under Databases or under the list of TEL databases). As the name implies, this resource is an index only and does not contain full-text material. It may, however, lead you to items that we may have in the library.

1. To search you can enter either the person's name or the start of their last name. Let's look for information on the well-know Baptist, Carlyle Marney. (Carson-Newman sponsors an annual lecture named in his honor.)

2. In this case, there are 5 entries for him and some of these have multiple items attached. You'll want to look at all of them. Let's just look at the first entry here.

3. Remember, this is just an index; you will have to look up the source in our online catalog to see if we have it.
