Finding Commentaries on books of the Bible


Finding commentaries in books.


Perhaps the easiest way to find commentaries in books is to browse through the major commentaries we have in the Reference Room. The call number for these is R 220.7. Keep in mind that you will not be able to check out any of these books.

To find commentaries that you can check out, go to the online catalog.

1. Choose Subject from the drop down menu.

2. Use the following "formula", Bible O T (or N T) Book of the Bible. For example to find commentaries on the gospel of John, you would type in the following, Bible N T John. Note that there is a space between the N and the T - it's important to include the space.

3. Then choose the relevant sub headings like "commentaries", and "criticism, interpretation, etc."

Finding commentaries in journals


There are two databases (periodical indexes) that you will want to consult to find references to commentaries in journals, InfoTrac OneFile and ATLA Religion Database. Both of these indexes contain some full text articles online as well as references to periodical articles. The link to these databases can be found on the Library home page under "Databases".
